University of Pittsburgh
Education
Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin, 1999
Profile

Wensheng Vincent Liu received his B.S. and his M.S. in Physics from Jilin University and Beijing Normal University in China, respectively. He then obtained his Ph.D., also in Physics, from the University of Texas at Austin. He finally joined the Physics Department of the University of Pittsburgh in 2004. Throughout his career, he has received several awards. He is a member of the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP) - China at the Chinese Academy of Sciences where he sits on the National Advisory Board and has been involved in numerous research programs at the KITP as either a participant, fellow, or scientist.

Research

Dr. Liu is interested in the theory of novel emergent phenomena of quantum condensed matter. He has considerable experience in interacting Bose and Fermi gases of cold atoms, quasi–one–dimensional electronic, charge and/or spin liquids (such as coupled Luttinger liquid models), and quasi 2D strongly correlated electronic systems such as high temperature superconductors. He also has a background in quantum field theory and is interested in all applications of it to condensed matter. His current research focuses on the rapidly developing field of ultra–cold atomic gases, driven largely by many ongoing experiments worldwide.
